Secretary of State Michael Gove said: “I am delighted to welcome John, Robert, Caroline and Judith. They will bring a strong and broad mix of skills and experience to the Environment Agency. I am also thrilled that Gill and Lynne will be continuing to help us with meeting the challenges ahead.”

Experience

Emma Howard Boyd, chair of the Environment Agency said appointing board members is “a highly competitive selection process and they will each bring a broad range of experience and expertise to the Environment Agency.”

Mrs Weeks has been reappointed by Mr Gove until September 2020. She was awarded an OBE in 2011 for services to the waste industry and had been involved in many industry sectors and had also worked for Veolia.

She told letsrecycle.com that she was “delighted” to have a second term as a board member. “There are so many things going on in terms of the waste sector at present and waste and recycling is very much on the secretary of state’s agenda.

“I am the board lead on waste and regulated industry and while we don’t make policy, I am in position to help ensure there is an understanding of the industry position and that issues can be discussed when needed.”

Plastics

Mrs Weeks added that: “For example, plastics and the Chinese market restrictions are on the current agenda and the EA are very keen to do what they can on plastics. We need to be careful and ask about what is happening to the plastic films which can’t go to China – where are they going and are we happy that the environmental standards are satisfactory?”

Waste-related matters also feature on the Agency’s environment and business committee which is chaired by Mrs Weeks. She explained: “We always have an update on waste and are working on several topics with industry.  The Agency set up a round table with ESA and signed an accord to work together on four elements: collaborative approach to regulation,  earned recognition , waste crime and knowledge transfer.  These are all topics where we can work together with industry.”
